Q: (19652)

When applying your DeoxIT® Shield and DeoxIT® Gold, does the applied contact area need to stay wet or can it be wiped off an still be effective? If either is applied to an RF connector and the connector is connected to a mating connector, does your Shield or Gold products need to be reapplied to be effective or can the connector(s) be used several times before reapplying? Thanks for your time.

Using the DeoxIT® D5 spray, will flush whatever is on the surface (immediately) and leave another thin layer of DeoxIT®. The layer is not solid, it stays a liquid.
If you want to remove everything, use a contact cleaner wash (plastic safe) that does not leave a residue.

Yes, effective in preventing tarnish on surfaces. May not totally remove tarnish on surfaces if it is present - will however, improve the conductivity of the connection.

Thank you very much. That was super helpful!

You indicated a solvent will remove Shield or the Gold formula. I assume that means your D5 spray will remove them. If that is correct will it take it right off or does it take soaking the connector with D5 and / or a brush to remove the Gold or Shield layer? Do both your Gold and Shield protect silver plated connectors from tarnishing?

Hello Steve,

Thank you for your questions.

Ideally, a thin layer is all that is required to be on the surface. If using a spray, just a few short bursts. Once the solvent evaporates, a thin layer of DeoxIT® remains. If using one of our 100% liquids, apply, then wipe off excess. The only way to remove all of it, is with a solvent.

When you apply DeoxIT® to one end of the RF connector and screw it to the other, DeoxIT® will migrate and treat the other side. If you can treat both sides, so much the better.

You can connect it multiple times. If you connect multiple times to an untreated connector, once it migrates, the resultant layer will be thinner. So, best to limit how many times you do this.
My guess would be to keep it under 6 times.

Good luck!

Regards,
Dr. DeoxIT®
