Message: We have a customer that is having connectivity issues on some of their products. When they use your DeoxIT G100L they state that they can get upwards of 60% improved results. The connectors in question are various SMT connectors mounted on PCBA’s (Hirose, Molex, Samtec, etc) all with gold contacts. I would like to know more about what may be the root cause and how your product is helping resolve the issues. If the pins are gold plated is there oxidation present? If so where is the oxidation originating (impurities in the plating, the nickel underneath the gold, etc)?

Hello Scott,

Thank you for your questions. These are common issues with component and board contacts.
Obviously, gold does not oxidize, however, there are many issues that can interrupt the signals, even on NEW parts.

For example;

a) Inferior plating process at the MFG plant.
b) Cleaning process at MFG plant before product is shipped.
c) Protection of parts in shipment from MFG plant and storage facility prior to installation.
d) Improper installation/assembly of parts - gold is damaged/scratched to expose the base metal.
e) If base metal is exposed, oxidation will occur. More severe, when exposed to harsh environments.
f) Dendrite/Fretting corrosion.

These are just a few of the issues that could be effecting the performance of the parts.

You mention a 60% improvement. Unless there is a physical reason for contact not to be restored, we may be able to improve that percentage.
If oxidation is severe or if other contaminants are present (review the first link below), our DeoxIT® D-Series may help restore more of the surfaces.
