We are a large service organization and treat many of our computer connections with DeoxIT® D-Series; including DIMM connectors and sockets, video card connectors, and other interconnects.  When we service equipment in the field, we treat the connections with DeoxIT®. After equipment has been in the field for months or years, we noticed a green residue on many of the edge connector pads.  What is the green stuff?

Since using the DeoxIT® our equipment has seen superior performance and reliability, saving us huge amounts of money, especially on warrantied equipment. Just would like to know what the green stuff is? The equipment treated with DeoxIT® are all still working flawlessly.

A: Indicates that DeoxIT® is removing copper oxides!

As you can see on the image, when the edge connector was inserted into the socket, the pads were damaged. This indicates either the socket was not designed perfectly, or the installer did not insert DIMM properly.  Notice that the wear on the pads get worse from left to right.  When this happens, the gold plating is compromised, and copper is exposed to the elements.  Over time the copper will oxidize and cause intermittents, data errors and over time failures.

Good news, you have treated the connectors with DeoxIT®. When DeoxIT® comes in contact with oxidized copper, it removes the oxides and lifts the copper-oxides off the surface, keeping the connection integrity.

The green residue indicates DeoxIT® is doing its job!

FYI:  When DeoxIT® comes into contact with yellow oxidized metals (copper, bronze, brass, etc.), the removed oxides will show a “green” color. When in contact with “white” oxidized metals (tin, nickel, silver, etc.), the removed oxides will show as black color.
